That being said, the laptop isn't used for much, just local Plex and usenet/torrent download stack so if it has to actually run for 4 days straight for a total VM backup, I really don't mind. Might be easier for me just to write a script that backs them up everytime I go visit them. I also want to do a VM backup, but each full VM backup is around 300GB so with my parent's 10MB/s upload speed. Should I look into any other programs like syncthing? Rsync has been solid for me, but now is the time to look at what options there are! I don't add/change files often, so it should be a simple job for rsync. I've setup a laptop with an encrypted external disk and I was going to let it once a week, connect to my main server using a WireGuard VPN, then rsync everything. I have my main server at my parent's and it has a local backup server that once a night does a complete data backup using rsync scripts and once a week does a complete VM backup using ghettoVCB.
